Healthy Paws vs Lemonade at a glance

Each insurer covers dogs and cats under an accident and illness policy, and neither one offers an accident-only plan. Dental illness, alternative therapy, and hereditary care come with the Healthy Paws base plan, and it sells no wellness add-on. Hereditary conditions are covered in the Lemonade base plan, and its optional add-ons cover exam fees, dental illness, behavioral care, physical therapy, and routine wellness. With either plan, you choose your own reimbursement rate and annual limit, the highest amount a policy pays toward vet bills in a year.

Prices and deductibles

According to a MarketWatch review, monthly premiums for dogs covered by the Healthy Paws accident and illness plan average $60. The price changes with your location, your pet's age, and the breed. For a dog or cat policy, Lemonade lists a $10 monthly starting price. Lemonade also offers a 10% bundle discount, a 5% multi-pet discount, and a 5% discount if you pay for the year.

You pay the deductible out of pocket before coverage starts; both companies set it annually (resetting each policy year). You can choose a $250 or $500 deductible from Healthy Paws, and Lemonade offers $750, $500, $250, or $100 deductible options. After you meet the deductible, the insurer pays back a share of the covered bill; that share is called reimbursement. At Healthy Paws you can pick a reimbursement rate from 50% to 90%, and at Lemonade you can pick 70%, 80%, or 90%. For annual limits, Healthy Paws gives you $5,000, $7,000, or an unlimited amount, whereas Lemonade spans $5,000 to $100,000.

Waiting periods, plus age limits

Your waiting period counts the days between buying a policy and the day coverage starts. At Healthy Paws, accidents have a 15-day waiting period, illnesses also have 15 days, and orthopedic conditions such as hip dysplasia have 12 months. At Lemonade, accidents have a waiting period of 0 days, illnesses have 14 days, and orthopedic conditions have 30 days.

Pre-existing conditions aren't covered by either company, even when no diagnosis has been made, if signs appeared before coverage or the waiting periods ended. Curable pre-existing conditions can be covered by Healthy Paws after 365 days with no symptoms and no treatment. In most states Lemonade covers curable conditions after 12 months with no recurring symptoms or treatment, but knee, ligament, and chronic conditions are excluded. Puppies and kittens can join both insurers from 8 weeks old. The oldest age you can enroll at Healthy Paws changes by state, and Lemonade sets no maximum age for older pets.

Which plan suits your pet

Below, each plan is matched by age, care needs, and billing preferences for your pet:

  • Direct payment to your vet matters to you: Healthy Paws fits, since the insurer can pay your vet directly rather than only reimbursing you.
  • For senior pets, Lemonade suits older dogs and cats, since enrollment carries no upper age limit.
  • Dental and alternative care come built in: Healthy Paws covers dental illness and alternative therapy automatically. Boarding, spay or neuter, behavioral training, and exam fees aren't covered.
  • If exam fees or routine care matter to you, Lemonade sells add-ons for behavioral treatments, vet visit fees, and preventive care.
  • Fast mobile claims are a priority for you: in its mobile app, Lemonade handles about 80% within 5 days and over 50% of claims instantly.
  • You like flexible claim filing: file with Healthy Paws using the app, online Customer Center, email, or by fax.
