Figo works well for owners who want a customizable policy, wellness care added, or a 5% discount when 2 or more pets are enrolled.

Trupanion fits owners who want no payout limits and the clinic paid at checkout rather than paying upfront.

Figo vs Trupanion at a glance

With Figo, owners of dogs and cats can choose an accident-and-illness or accident-only option, and add wellness and exam fee add-ons. Trupanion offers one plan for dogs and cats: accident-and-illness coverage. You can also add behavioral and alternative therapy. The share of a covered bill that the insurer pays back is called reimbursement; you can adjust it with Figo, but not with Trupanion. A plan's annual limit is the highest amount it pays in one year; Trupanion has no cap at all.

Prices and deductibles

Trupanion's investor Q&A gives sample monthly prices. One is $20 each month for a domestic short-haired cat living in Boise, Idaho. Another example shows $200 each month for an English Bulldog living in Manhattan, New York.

Before insurance starts sharing the bill, you pay the deductible amount out of pocket. With Figo, the annual deductible from $100 to $1,500 is paid once a year, and pet age affects which options you can pick. Trupanion's deductible is lifetime and per-condition, from $0 to $1,000, and you pay it once for every separate illness or injury.

After the deductible, covered costs are reimbursed by Figo at 70%, 80%, 90%, or 100%. Pay the vet first, then file claims through the Pet Cloud app (or online); most claims finish in about 3 working days. Trupanion pays 90% every time with no payout limit, sent straight to participating vets through VetDirect Pay, or paid by check or direct deposit.

How long you wait and which ages qualify

The waiting period is the number of days between your enrollment and the day coverage starts. Under Figo, accidents have a 1-day waiting period, while illnesses need 14 days and orthopedic conditions need 6 months. Trupanion's waiting times are 5 days for accidents, plus 30 days for illnesses. Problems that show signs before coverage begins, or during the waiting period, aren't covered by either plan. However, Figo may cover curable conditions that stay free of symptoms and treatment for 12 months.

Age rules differ too. Figo enrolls pets starting at 8 weeks old, and it sets no upper age limit. Starting at birth (0 to 7 weeks old), Trupanion enrolls pets, and pets may join before their 14th birthday with lifetime coverage.

Which plan fits your pet

When the fine print is checked, both cover hereditary conditions along with dental illnesses across the 50 states. Trupanion also operates in Canada, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. With no claims, you can cancel within 30 days and receive a full refund from either plan (Trupanion excludes New York).
