Figo vs Healthy Paws at a glance
Dogs and cats get coverage from both insurers. Figo offers a wellness add-on, along with an accident and illness plan and an accident-only option. Healthy Paws offers one accident and illness policy, without a wellness add-on or coverage for exam fees. You choose reimbursement with each company, which sets the share of a covered vet bill paid back by the plan. You can also choose an annual limit at Healthy Paws, which is the most your policy pays in one year.
Prices and deductibles
A MarketWatch review lists a published price example of $60 per month for a dog with the Healthy Paws accident and illness plan. Your rate depends on your location, your pet's age, and the breed, and Figo doesn't publish one flat monthly sample price.
Each insurer charges an annual deductible, which you pay each year toward covered bills before insurance pays. Figo deductibles run between $100 and $1,500 based on your pet's age, while the Healthy Paws choices are $250 or $500.
Figo offers 70%, 80%, or 90% reimbursement alongside its highest tier. You choose reimbursement of 50% to 90% at Healthy Paws, then pick a yearly cap: $5,000, $7,000, or unlimited.
Pet age limits and waiting periods
A waiting period is the time between your enrollment and the start of coverage, and every policy has one. At Figo, accidents have a 1-day wait, illnesses 14 days, and orthopedic conditions 6 months. With Healthy Paws, accidents require a 15-day wait, illnesses 15 days, and hip dysplasia and orthopedic conditions 12 months.
Conditions that showed signs before your coverage started or during a waiting period are excluded by both companies, as are spaying and neutering. At Figo, past conditions that can be cured may qualify after 12 months without symptoms or treatment, while Healthy Paws uses 365 days.
With either insurer, enrollment for puppies and kittens starts at 8 weeks old. Figo places no upper age limit on older pets, but maximum enrollment ages at Healthy Paws differ by state.
Which insurer matches your pet's needs
Both policies include hereditary and congenital disorders, dental illness, and alternative therapy coverage, but Healthy Paws leaves out behavioral care, boarding, and routine dental visits The right policy for you depends on how you want it to work:
- A senior pet is a good fit for Figo, which fits older dogs and cats without an upper enrollment age limit.
- For exam fee coverage, you can add an exam fee add-on with Figo, but Healthy Paws doesn't cover exam fees.
- You want direct vet pay: Figo pays you back in about 3 working days on average, while Healthy Paws can pay your vet directly
- If you want a refund window, Figo provides a 30-day window (varying by state). You can receive a full refund within that period if you file no claims.
- For mobile claim tools, Figo provides its Pet Cloud app, and Healthy Paws offers a mobile app, an online Customer Center, email, and fax.
Policies for Figo are administered by Figo Pet Insurance, LLC in Chicago, Illinois, and underwritten by Independence American Insurance Company. ACE American Insurance Company and Westchester Fire Insurance Company underwrite Healthy Paws policies.
