Embrace vs Trupanion at a glance
With Embrace, you choose accident-and-illness or accident-only plans for your policy, and you can add an optional wellness add-on that handles routine care You also choose two things: your reimbursement, meaning the share of a covered bill paid by the plan, and your annual limit The maximum a policy pays out in one year is called the annual limit. Trupanion sells a single accident and illness coverage plan. Its reimbursement rate is fixed, there is no routine care add-on, and payouts are unlimited.
Pricing and deductibles
For most Embrace dog parents, the monthly price runs $20 to $70; age, breed, where you live, and which coverage you pick all affect it. In Trupanion's investor Q&A examples, one cat in Boise, Idaho is priced at $20 a month (a domestic short-haired cat). In that same Q&A, one example shows $200 a month for an English Bulldog living in Manhattan, New York.
Think of a deductible as the vet bill amount you cover before the insurer starts paying. Embrace's deductible options run $100, $250, $500, $750, or $1,000 a year, and you meet that amount every policy year. For Trupanion, the deductible is a lifetime per-condition deductible running from $0 up to $1,000, and you meet it a single time for every new condition.
Embrace lets you set reimbursement from 70% to 90% and choose annual limits at $2,000, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $30,000, plus an unlimited option. Every Trupanion policy uses 90% reimbursement, and payouts carry no yearly cap.
Waiting periods plus age limits
A waiting period is how many days pass after you buy a policy before coverage starts. Embrace waiting periods run 0 days for accidents, 14 for illnesses, and 180 for orthopedic and cruciate ligament conditions. Trupanion's waiting periods are 5 days for accidents and 30 days for illnesses. Problems noticed before or during the wait aren't covered by either plan, although Embrace may cover curable ones later.
With Embrace, enrollment for a dog or cat opens at 6 weeks old, and no upper age limit applies. Trupanion enrolls dogs and cats at 0 to 7 weeks, accepts pets up to the 14th birthday, and then covers them for life.
Which one is right for your pet
- Direct vet payment: Trupanion fits when your clinic uses VetDirect Pay, because Embrace pays no vet directly at checkout.
- Exams and alternative therapy: Embrace covers acupuncture and behavioral care and sells an add-on for exam fees, while Trupanion never pays exam fees.
- Dental and hereditary conditions: Each plan covers hereditary conditions; Trupanion covers dental illnesses in full, though Embrace's dental illness coverage stays limited
- Older pets: Embrace fits senior pets, since it has no upper enrollment age limit; Trupanion stops enrolling pets once they pass its birthday cutoff
- Coverage outside the states: Through American Pet Insurance Company, Trupanion also covers DC, Puerto Rico, along with Canada. American Modern Insurance Group underwrites Embrace.
